How fast can I lose "X" weight?

I frequently get asked: "How fast can I lose "X" weight?"

This is usually asked by someone who has blown way past their panic weight, and they're willing (for now at least) to do absolutely everything it takes to ease this pain.

2-a-day workouts?

No Problem!

Fast for 48 Hours?

Consider it done.

Purchase my overpriced diuretic "Detox" supplements?

Where's my wallet?!

This is the world where sleazy health and fitness gurus make their money.

Whether either of you know it or not, you will fail and be back for your next "Panic Package" in another 3 -6 months.

No matter who you are, you cannot keep these things up for very long.

In fact, most people swing the pendulum so hard that they set themselves up for massive fat REGAIN once they're willpower has been beaten into submission.

When I'm asked this question, I immediately deflect and ask:

"How fast can you drive home from work?"

They're normally slightly taken aback, so before they answer I press:

"Do you think you could beat your best time if you just went pedal to the metal?"

"What about if you didn't use your brakes?"

"That could be even faster!"

When presenting a similar problem, but illustrated from a different domain, people start to realize that they may have been duped.

Just like you should obey the traffic laws to arrive at your destination safely, you should also keep in mind the laws of physics when trying to reach your health destination.

Newton's Third Law states: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

So before you get ready to overhaul everything in your life in the name of the "New You", are you prepared for the impact of that equal and opposite reaction that will be coming down the line?

Most people won't have the willpower or resolve to absorb the impact of massive, immediate change of their entire life.

With that said, most people WILL have the willpower and resolve to absorb the impact of small 1% changes, and they'll be able to do it more frequently because they're so manageable.

You just don't get there as fast...

But did you ever end up breaking your record without using your breaks?

Or did you end up getting in an accident endangering your health while wasting even more time and money in the process?
